There was an alarming increase in the number of violent cases committed against women in the city in the last three years, the City Social Welfare and Development Office reported.

Assistant City Social Welfare and Development officer Lisa Bulayongan said the city recorded 66 cases from January to October this year, an 11 percent increase from the previous year’s 59 cases. In 2019, there were 47 cases recorded during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Let us be vigilant to violence against women, it chooses no time or place. We further encourage our partners in the barangay (village) to sustain the strengthening of the functions violence against women desks, which serves as the first line of response to our victim survivors. Let us join hands in capacitating violence against women desk officers and other officials on how to handle said cases,” Bulayongan said.

The city has an 18-day campaign to end violence against women of all ages, which is a challenge to both the government and the non-government sectors, private and civil society organizations. She noted that it is time to be aware and join millions all over the world in advocating for the welfare of women of all ages, and protecting them from any untoward violence and their rights preserved.

She admitted that the pandemic somehow triggered violence against women and girls, who were abused by their intimate partners or even relatives.

“As doors closed and isolation began, Bulayongan claimed that reports of all forms of violence against women and girls, particularly domestic violence began to significantly increase,” she added.

The World Health Organization indicated that about 1 in 3 women worldwide have experienced either physical or sexual violence from their intimate partners or non-partners in their lifetime.
