Calapan PTA seeks VP Sara’s help for flooded schools

Parents and teachers are asking Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary and Vice President Sara Duterte to help two schools here that are still submerged in waistto chest-deep waters brought by the torrential rains in the past few weeks.

According to the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) Federation, the Caguisikan Elementary School and the Caguisikan Child Development Center in Barangay Gutad were still inundated on Monday, January 23.

Gilbert Matchimura, president of the PTA Federation in the city, in a telephone interview on Monday, told The Manila Times that although the city government of Calapan is extending assistance to the campus, “this is only minimal to the gargantuan problem of the school.”

“We think there is a need to construct new buildings wherein students can still go to school even if there is flood. The city cannot afford to build such a building, that is why we are asking VP Sara to help us,” Matchimura said.

He added that both schools cater to at least 65 families in the community by standard, the schools are considered as small. The earlier plan to relocate the school buildings was not feasible because the relocation site is not part of the village.

Matchimura added that the office of Negros Oriental Third District Rep. Arnolfo Teves had extended assistance to residents affected by the flooding in the Sitio Caguisikan in the form of food packs, breads and P5,000 cash aid.

Matchimura also said that they had brought the matter to the Parent and Teachers United Advocates Association of the Philippines, a national alliance of PTAs in the country.

“They will help bring the matter to the attention of the Office of the Vice President, DepEd and the senators,” he said.
