NOW Telecom gets USTDA grant for 5G network launch

A $1.5-million grant for the Philippines for “clean and trusted” 5G (fifth-generation) communications networks has become official with the signing of a grant agreement between the United States of America, acting through the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) and NOW Telecom Co. Inc.

“This deployment is expected to support the development of a secure 5G stand-alone (SA) network infrastructure in the Philippines,” NOW Telecom said in a statement.

High-ranking government officials were present to witness the signing, including Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink, US Ambassador MaryKay Carlson and Department of Information and Communication Technology Undersecretary Angelo Nuestro.

“The project objective is threefold, involving key infrastructure COMPONENTS: fiRST, TO DESIGN AND implement a pilot 5G SA network in Metro Manila; second, to design a nationwide stand-alone 5G wireless network; and third, to design and plan for a nationwide broadband network,” NOW said.

It added that the project would advance the priorities of the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment and the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, with the goal of developing, expanding and deploying secure digital infrastructure to power economic growth and facilitate open digital societies while supporting the current administration’s digital infrastructure agenda.

The signing of the letter of intent took place earlier at the Indo-Pacific Business Forum on Jan. 12, 2023.
