Ecology message meets the Gospels

THE environmental message on nurturing the natural wonders of the Philippines is visually interwoven with several books of the Bible in Mahal Books’ collections. Published separately, the four Gospels — Matthew, Mark, Luke and John — along with the books of the Psalms and the Proverbs portray the stories of Scripture side by side with images of the Philippine ecosystem.

Each original photo was taken separately from various provinces in the country. A Mahal Books statement explains the collection’s vision: “We live in one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and should thus appreciate it in all its wonderful glory whether it be a panoramic shot of a gorgeous island, or a close-up shot of a juicy, fresh mango. Everything is interconnected with God’s grace guiding us.”

Taking into account that many people are visual learners, the design’s placement of photos of creations next to the Bible texts may help stimulate different forms of contemplation. The “Alive Pages” in some of the books provide the readers a multisensory experience through tech.

Mahal Books will also launch on Easter Monday a travel-sized book designed for readers with active lifestyles who prefer a more mobile kind of reading.

A portion of the books’ sales is donated to nongovernmental organizations like Gawad Kalinga, which helps alleviate poverty through real economic change, and the Reef Check Foundation, with a mission to save ocean corals and reefs.
