INTERIOR Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos Jr. has ordered the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to prioritize the investigation into the more than 30-hour fire that gutted down the historic Manila Central Post Office building in Manila.

The fire, which started at 11:41 p.m. on Sunday, was declared “fire out” at 6:33 a.m. Tuesday. The incident escalated to general alarm after flames engulfed the entire building early morning Monday.

“We must get to the bottom of this unfortunate incident at all costs and at the soonest possible time,” Abalos said.

“That is why I am calling on the BFP to prioritize the investigation of the Manila Central Post Office fire and exhaust all means necessary to find out the cause of this incident that destroyed one of the country’s architectural heritage and national historical landmarks,” he added.

Sen. Lorna Regina “Loren” Legarda also called for an immediate investigation of the incident.

She said the tragedy underscored the importance of cultural mapping to establish and strengthen the preservation of national heritage for the present and future generations.

The Senate on Tuesday ratified the bicameral conference committee report on the proposed Cultural Mapping Bill, amending Republic Act 10066 or the “National Cultural Heritage Act of 2009.”

According to an initial report by the BFP, the fire started in the basement where paper, wood and other items made of light materials were stored. The fire reached the top floors and destroyed various equipment, including parcels and national identification cards that were being sorted for delivery.

The damage caused by the fire is estimated to reach P300 million, according to authorities.

At least people were hurt in the fire, of which 17 were government and volunteer firemen.

“I commend the gallant men and women of the BFP, as well as our volunteer firefighters who have shown heroism and courage in the face of adversity. Your heroism is priceless; that’s why I salute and sincerely thank you all,” Abalos said.

He also instructed the BFP to make sure that the BFP personnel and fire volunteers who were injured in the incident will be given appropriate help.
