Escamis shines as MU turns back AU

CLINT Escamis registered a near triple-double performance to power Mapua past Arellano, 92-76, in the 16th FilOil EcoOil Preseason Cup at the FilOil EcoOil Center on Saturday, May 27.

Escamis poured 12 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists as the Cardinals bounced back from their 75-78 loss to the EAC Generals on May 21.

Marc Cuenco likewise came through with 17 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Warren Bonifacio put up 16 markers, eight boards and six assists.

Kobe Dalisaya chipped in 18 points and three assists as Jopet Soriano added a near double-double of eight points and 10 rebounds.

Mapua improved to a 4-win and 2-loss record, third best in the NCAA bracket.

The Cardinals played catch up in the first half, but a 27-point third-quarter performance turned a 39-45 halftime deficit into a 66-59 advantage at the end of the fourth period.

The Chiefs stayed within striking distance after Jade Talampas scored on a layup, 66-69, at the 7:27 mark of the quarter. From there, Mapua put Arellano away with a 17-6 run capped by an Escamis layup to seize an insurmountable 86-72 advantage.

Lars Sunga got 16 points and four rebounds for Arellano while Jude Bagay dropped 18 points.

The Chiefs stayed winless at 0-6.
