NHCP unveils Jose Rizal historical marker in New Jersey

THE National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) led by its Executive Director Carminda Arevalo unveiled the historical marker, “Jose Rizal (1861-1896),” on Nov. 17, 2023, 11 a.m. at the Rizal Monument, Cooper River Park, Camden County, Cherry Hill, New Jersey, USA.

The marker states: “Jose Rizal1861-1896: A Filipino hero. Born on 19 JUNE 1861, Doctor, Scientist, Writer, and Educator. Authored works about the ills of the Philippine Colonial Society of the time. He advocated reforms but was charged with Rebellion, Sedition, and Illegal Association. An icon of the 1896 Philippine Revolution, he was executed on 30 December 1896. His martyrdom contributed to the birth of the Filipino Nation.”

Arevalo officially turned over the marker to Camden County Department of Parks Commissioner Jeffrey Nash, Philippine Consulate General in New York Consul General Senen Mangalile, Dr. Jose Rizal Centennial Inc. Chairman Eleanor Esguerra Benitez, Roman Ventura and Eleonor Samonte of NHCP stood as witnesses during the signing of the certificate of transfer.

Nash delivered his acceptance message after signing the certificate of transfer.

The unveiling at Cherry Hill, New Jersey was made possible through the cooperation of the Philippine Consulate General in New York, Camden County Department of Parks, Dr. Jose P. Rizal Centennial Inc. and Filipino Executive Council of Greater Philadelphia.

The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research and publications and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures.
